SMART Amalgam Removal

Whole Healing Dental utilizes the SMART protocol standards as set by the IAOMT!

SMART is the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique which is a set of safety measures to reduce mercury exposures during dental amalgam filling removal. These safety measures were developed as a result of scientific research collected by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. (IAOMT).

All dental amalgams, also referred to as silver fillings, contain 50% mercury (a neurotoxin) which is constantly released in the form of an invisible vapor. The process of drilling out amalgam fillings releases even higher quantitites of mercury vapor and fine particulates that can be inhaled and absorbed through the lungs. This is potentially harmful to patients, dentists, other dental workers, the fetuses of patients and all dental personnel.

Some patients have their silver/mercury amalgam fillings removed because their doctors have recommended it for health reasons. Other patients require the removal of amalgram fillings due to device failure and/or hypersensitivity. Removal of these fillings without protective measures can result in unsafe mercury exposures. Based on up-to-date scientific reasearch, the IAOMT has developed rigorous recommendations for removing amalgam filings that assist in reducing the potential negative health effects of mercury exposure.

Dr. Dayries and Dr. Widjaja follow the protective biological dentistry measures set forth by the IAOMT in order to mitigate mercury releases during amalgam removal.

If you would like more information, the booklet, Dentistry without Mercury, explains the pros and cons on the use of amalgam as a dental material and also gives the position of the American Dental Association on the safety of dental amalgam.
